When I mention to people that I’m trying to watch what I eat and exercise more, I sometimes get a response that bothers me. That response is “You’re so skinny, why do you need to do that?”  While I don’t personally think I’m skinny, I also don’t agree with this outlook. Exercising and eating healthy are more than a diet and have more purpose than shrinking a waist line or making the number on the scale go down.

I’ve always been lucky. I used to be able to eat whatever I wanted and it wouldn’t show a bit on my body. While this has changed with age, I’d still say that I’m lucky in that I can eat unhealthy and still maintain a smaller waist than some. I’m not proud of this and in fact, sometimes I hate this. It makes it harder to focus on being healthier when you don’t see physical downsides to your habits.

It’s not all about the physical though. It’s about the mental and emotional as well. It’s about the future rather than the here and now. It’s about helping your body live longer through healthy habits. This is what I have chosen to focus on for my health journey. I’m looking to improve more than my physical appearance. I’m looking to change the person I am on the inside so that I can live longer and enjoy my future (whatever it may hold).
