This year is baby’s first Christmas for us. This means I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about traditions and some of the things that I would like to start as a family (either now or in the future). Since I’ve spent a lot of time browsing and gathering ideas, I thought I’d take some time to share a few of the popular ones I’ve come across in case it might help someone else to have them all in one place. I don’t have sources for these ideas because they’ve accumulated over time and I’m pulling them from my memory.
I want to keep this short and simple so that it’s an easy reference rather than making you read through several paragraphs to find the ideas. With that being said, I’m going to use the classic list format that I’ve used in past posts when I’ve shared a bank of ideas. If you see one that you’d like to know a little more about, simply leave a comment and I’ll elaborate for you!
Drive around and look at the lights in your neighborhood.
Put up the Christmas tree together.
Get a new ornament each year to add to the tree.
Leave Santa’s gifts unwrapped.
Watch Christmas movies as a countdown to the holiday.
Read a different holiday story each night. (You could also wrap them up for a fun countdown.)
Read The Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve.
Bake holiday treats together.
Decorate cookies as a family.
Have a nice dinner for Christmas Day.
Celebrate the season with special pajamas.
Set aside one day designated to shopping.
Take a holiday photo for cards.
Send Christmas cards to friends and family.
Decorate the house.
Listen to (instrumental) Christmas music during dinner.
Watch Frozen on the first snowfall.
Use an advent calendar for a fun countdown to the holiday.
Set aside a day for holiday crafts.
Go to a tree lighting.
Sit on Santa’s lap.
Write a letter to Santa.
These are just a few of the ideas I’ve come across. Have one that’s not mentioned? Leave it in the comments and I’ll add it to the list! I’ll also continue to add to the list as I remember more!
What are some of your favorite family traditions for the holiday season?
